Academic Interests

Dr. Liarski’s research interests are focused on the study of the role, cellular make-up, and processes that lead to inflammation. One of his current research projects is focused on elucidating the importance of interstitial inflammation in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus [SLE], afflicted with nephritis. The specific aim of this project is to elucidate the role that interstitial, as opposed to glomerular, involvement plays in patients' overall prognosis and the mechanisms by which this takes place. To this end, Dr. Liarski, working together with the laboratories of Dr. Marcus Clark and Dr. Maryellen Giger, created a novel computerized image analysis and cell-distance quantitation method that can be used in an unbiased, high-throughput manner to determine individual cell-cell interactions taking place within clinical samples of human tissue. His current areas of interest include image analysis, machine learning, advanced microscopy techniques, bioinformatics, and immunology.
