Dr. Cheng-Kai Kao is an academic hospitalist interested in clinical informatics, population health, and process reengineering in healthcare. He currently serves as medical director of international patient services at University of Chicago Medical Center, where he oversees the hospitalization of international patients, optimizes their care transitions, builds an innovative medical second opinion program, and fosters global collaboration with overseas hospitals and healthcare organizations.
Dr. Kao also serves as medical director of informatics at University of Chicago Medicine, and his work focuses on developing clinical decision support tools, leveraging mobile technology to enhance clinical workflow and population health, and making innovations on the interactive inpatient care system. He is the chair of the clinical process review committee, where he leads an interdisciplinary team with delegated responsibility for review and approval of physician order sets. Also as the director of the clinical iPad task force in the Section of Hospital Medicine, he trains the new hospitalists and supervises the clinical use of mobile devices.
